Carmel-by-the-Sea
Better known by the shortened “Carmel,” the small Oceanside town is the closest town to Whisper, about fifteen miles north. It is a popular alternative for people who want the feel of Whisper without having to deal with the familiar sights and people. The high school, Carmel High, home of the Padres, is the best alternative for students who cannot afford Whisper’s private high school. It is also known for hiring a few Whisper locals for jobs.
Carmel is well known for having once had actor Clint Eastwood as the Mayor. Fittingly, it is a very artist friendly town, containing theaters for performance art as well as local musical talent. The town is held in regard (or apathy, depending on the person) for being one of the most dog friendly towns in the state. Rare is the business in Carmel that will not allow a dog to come in. However, you may find yourself asking a few residents for directions, as Carmel does not have street addresses.
Monterey
The closest ‘big city’ to Whisper, Monterey is about twenty miles north. It is the home of famous landmarks such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Canary Row. Monterey and its neighbors form the economic center for the Monterey coastline. The town houses the closest major hospital to Whisper, as well as the outdoor mall, the Del Monte Shopping Center.
For those who want some excellent seafood, the Monterey Wharf is a recommended area, featuring many restaurants of varied sizes and scope, almost all of which house their own version of ‘the wharf’s best clam chowder.’ To those that want to experience a bustling nightlife, Monterey is the closest destination. It is also home to the port where boats large and small dock and disembark.
College students are able to further their education at California State University Monterey (better known as Cal State Monterey or CSUMB), a relatively new college campus erected from the shell of former military base Fort Ord.
Marina, Pacific Grove and Seaside
Monterey’s “sister towns,” the distance from each of these towns to Monterey is incredibly small. Each town offers a very similar feel to Monterey without certain amenities and a significantly less touristy feel. Each town has its own view of the Pacific Ocean, making them each popular alternatives to Monterey Proper.
Salinas
A little bit less than an hour drive North-East from Whisper, Salinas is the reason that Monterey County is coined the deadliest county in the State of California. People in the area joke about taking bulletproof vests and not looking anyone in the eye while they are in Salinas, but behind these lighthearted remarks lurks an impossible to ignore truth: the homicide rate in Salinas (primarily due to gang violence) is staggering when compared to the surrounding areas, and many would sooner avoid the town if given the choice.
Salinas is home to the very well known Salinas County Rodeo, which becomes a very big event every summer for those who enjoy rodeos. It also houses Northridge Mall, an indoor mall that is a popular spot for its local teens.
Salinas is home to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, arguably the best hospital in Monterey County (some joke it is due to the amount of shooting victims that come its way). Salinas Valley Memorial is equipped with some of the best equipment and features an excellent cardiology department.
Santa Cruz
Stepping outside of Monterey County, Santa Cruz is approximately forty miles north of Whisper, staying along the beautiful California Coast. Like Monterey, Santa Cruz is a hub for tourism. For most visitors, the main draw of Santa Cruz is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Recently celebrating its 100th year in operation, the Boardwalk is a moderately sized amusement park featuring carnival-esque attractions on a much larger scale. The park is open in full operation mostly during the summer, though it frequently operates on a lesser scale during the weekends. Always open is the Casino Arcade, arguably the finest arcade in central California.
Outside of the Boardwalk, Santa Cruz is known for being a very liberal town. There are a lot of people who could be classified as ‘hippies’ roaming the streets. The town features a thriving knickknack market, with stores peppering some of the streets with unique offerings. In addition to the more unique shopping experiences the town offers, it is also a hub for brand names.
San Jose
If Monterey is the social hot zone of Monterey County, San Jose is central valley’s metropolis. About 70 miles north-east of Whisper, San Jose is home to almost everything a person would need to have a good time. It is in the heart of the Silicon Valley, and it shows. The town has three major malls, a sports arena that doubles as a place where the hottest acts go to perform concerts, another amusement park in the suburbs (California’s Great America), and so much more.
